Kitchen benchtops and splashbacks for Queensland homes

The benchtop is the hardest-working surface in the house. We help you pick one that suits how you cook, then pair it with a splashback that is easy to keep clean.

What is the best benchtop material for a kitchen?

There is no single best benchtop. Porcelain and sintered surfaces resist heat, stains and UV, natural granite is very hard-wearing, marble is beautiful but marks easily, compact laminate is tough and affordable, and timber is warm but needs oiling. Engineered stone can no longer be installed in Australia, so these are the main alternatives.

From template to final seal

Benchtops are measured after cabinetry is installed so they fit the real carcasses, not a drawing. We manage the template, fabrication and installation as part of your project.

  • Digital or physical template taken once cabinetry is level and fixed
  • Cut-outs for undermount or top-mount sinks, cooktops and tap holes
  • Edge profiles from thin square edges to mitred waterfall ends
  • Splashback supply and install in tile, glass, porcelain slab or stone
  • Silicone and sealing with mould-resistant products for humid kitchens
  • Care guide for your chosen surface so it keeps looking new

Benchtop materials compared

Since 1 July 2024, engineered stone benchtops, slabs and panels cannot be supplied, processed or installed in Australia. These are the materials Queensland homeowners now choose between.

MaterialStrengthsWatch out for
Porcelain and sinteredHeat, stain, scratch and UV resistant. Thin, slab-sized and suitable for outdoor kitchensEdges can chip on hard impact. Fabrication must be done by experienced installers
GraniteVery hard and heat tolerant natural stone with unique patternsNeeds periodic sealing. Heavy, so cabinetry must be solid
MarbleClassic veining and a cool, soft feelEtches with lemon, vinegar and wine. Best for owners who like a patina
Compact laminateSolid-core, thin profile, water resistant and very hard-wearingDo not place hot pans directly on the surface. Limited thick-edge looks
Solid timberWarm, repairable and quiet to work onNeeds oiling and care around sinks. Best as an island top or feature

Choosing surfaces for Queensland conditions

Local conditions shape every decision we make, from materials to ventilation.

UV and outdoor use

For alfresco kitchens and sunny islands, porcelain and sintered surfaces will not fade or yellow like some resins.

Humidity and mould

We seal joins with mould-resistant silicone and recommend splashbacks with as few grout lines as possible.

Gas cooktop clearances

Splashbacks behind gas cooktops must meet the clearance and heat-resistance requirements of the Australian gas installation standard.

Silica-safe choices

We do not install banned engineered stone. Fabricators of natural stone follow strict dust controls to protect workers.

Can I still get engineered stone benchtops in Australia?

No. Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs have been banned across Australia since 1 July 2024 because cutting them exposes workers to crystalline silica dust, which causes silicosis. Porcelain, sintered surfaces, natural stone, compact laminate and timber are the most popular alternatives.

What is the most durable kitchen benchtop?

Porcelain and sintered surfaces are among the most durable for everyday use because they resist heat, scratches, stains and UV. Granite is also very hard-wearing. Compact laminate is the toughest option at a lower price.

How long does benchtop installation take?

After cabinetry is installed, the template is taken and the benchtop is fabricated, which usually takes one to two weeks. Installation itself is often completed in a day.

What is the easiest splashback to clean?

A single slab of glass, porcelain or stone has no grout lines and wipes clean quickly. Large-format tiles with tight, epoxy-grouted joints are the next easiest.

Can you replace a benchtop without replacing cabinets?

Yes, if the existing cabinets are level, sturdy and in good condition. Heavier materials may need the cabinetry checked and reinforced first.
